Ferguson in Cleverley U-turn

Tom Cleverley appeared set to sign for the Latics on a twelve month loan deal, but United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has changed his mind over the deal in favour of keeping the youngster at Old Trafford. The 21 year old midfielder was set to join the Latics after boss Roberto Martinez had convinced the England under 21 midfielder that Wigan was better for his future than either Bolton or Newcastle. Cleverley, who spent time on loan with Watford last season, was said to prefer the passing style of play adopted by the Latics under Martinez. During his spell with Watford, Cleverley managed a very respectable 11 goals in 33 apperances for the Hornets, securing the player of the year prize in the process. However Sir Alex Ferguson has performed a dramatic U-turn and the player will now remain at Old Trafford for the duration of the season. Ferguson said: "Tom Cleverley is going to stay. He is an exceptional young player in the sense of his ability to play in different positions. "He is such a mobile boy who can play wide on either side and in central midfield. Also, which he has showed at Watford last year, he is a goalscorer. "The days of expecting Paul Scholes to score 15 goals a season have gone now. "We have to look at that area of the team because we must get goals from midfield. Tom has got outstanding qualities as far as goalscoring is concerned, so he is going to stay." This news is likely to be a big blow for Martinez who wanted Cleverley to play wide left, allowing Rodallega to push up front with new striker Mauro Boselli. CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
