Wigan manager Roberto Martinez is heartened by the arrival of midfielder Mohamed Diame from Rayo Vallecano.
The 22-year-old Frenchman was handed his debut against Manchester United after sealing his move in the hours before kick-off.
Martinez said: "He is a superb athlete, very tactically aware and strong in the tackle.
"He is a player who has the potential to really grace the Premier League. We are really excited to have him here at our club.
"Mohamed adds competition to the squad and give another dimension for our team."
