Defensive duo ruled out of United game

Emmerson Boyce has returned to light training following his hamstring injury, whilst Gary Caldwell is facing upto a month on the sidelines with a torn quad muscle. Boyce has been out for a number of weeks after picking up the strain in the home draw with neighbours Bolton. Although he has started light training, Martinez is unlikely to risk the Barbadian defender just yet. Gary Caldwell meanwhile is set for a spell on the sidelines of upto a month after suffering a tear in his quad muscle against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend. The Scotland international defender underwent a double hip operation in the summer and so this set back will be somewhat frustrating for Martinez. The good news for the Latics is that Steve Gohouri came through his first team return against West Bromwich Albion at the weekend unscathed, and is set to partner Antolin Alcaraz at centre back, with Maynor Figueroa returning at left back. Tom Cleverley is also unavailable for the fixture as he is not allowed to face his parent club. James McCarthy remains the only long term absentee and is said to be recovering well from surgery on his inured ankle. CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
