Coyle confirms striker chase

Owen Coyle has revealed that he wants to add at least two new strikers to the present squad ahead of the new season.

The Latics have already lost Mauro Boselli and Franco di Santo this summer and seem destined to lose Arouna Kone to Everton.

This leaves the present squad with just Filip Orsula from the development squad as a recognised striker with Shaun Maloney and Callum McManaman the most recognised forwards from the first team.

Hence there being no surprise that Coyle is looking to add at least two strikers to the squad for the forthcoming season.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, the new Latics boss said: “It’s fair to say we are looking for a minimum of two, possibly three, strikers, and we’re working desperately hard to make that happen.

“Arouna has done well for this club, but at this moment in time we need players who want to be here and want to take Wigan Athletic back into the Premier League.

“That gives us the chance at this early stage of summer to adjust our thinking and bring in the necessary quality to the forward line.”

Coyle confirmed that he has no intent of keeping players against their will and wants only players hungry to comete for the Latics within his squad.

“You can have the greatest player in the world, but if their heart’s not in the fight then you won’t get the best out of them,” he added.

“The lads we have brought in all had better offers from elsewhere, but they all bought into the big picture of what we’re trying to do here – and those are the type of player we want here.”

The new season kicks off for the Latics on Saturday 3rd of August with the trip to Oakwell to face Barnsley.
