Caldwell admits the players were disappointed with the result, but he has been more upset by the negative reaction and wants everyone to support the side. "The negativity which surrounds this group - whatever it is, whatever agenda people may have against the manager or the players - it has to change," the Wigan defender said in the Daily Record. "We need everyone - and that's the whole country - to get behind this team because it's difficult to qualify. We need the positivity to come back."
Caldwell was pleased with the fighting spirit shown by Scotland against Macedonia and still believes they can qualify from a tough group. He said: "The application and attitude of every single player - those who started and the ones who came off the bench - was total. We gave it everything we had.
"We just weren't good enough again on the night - the final pass, putting the ball in the net, creating something. "We're bitterly disappointed that we haven't managed to win the game. But we're still in this - we all believe that - and we just need everyone else to believe that. "We have to stick together and stay strong as a group - we don't want to use negativity as a motivation."
