Caldwell handed Latics armband

Wigan Athletic defender Gary Caldwell has been named as the Latics' new club captain.[LNB] The 28-year-old Scotland international, who joined the club from Celtic in January, takes over from Mario Melchiot, who left the DW Stadium in the summer.[LNB]Caldwell is currently sidelined after undergoing a double hip operation and the armband will be worn by one of a committee of vice-captains in his absence.[LNB]Chris Kirkland, Mike Pollitt, Emmerson Boyce, Steve Gohouri and Antolin Alcaraz have been voted by their team-mates to represent the team as vice-captains.[LNB]Kirkland led out the side in their season-opening defeat by Blackpool last Saturday.[LNB]"It's a massive honour for me to have been named club captain and a role I'll take great pride in," said Caldwell. "After my arrival in January it didn't take me long to realise how special a club this is and how much it means to the fans. As usual the rest of the team and I will be giving 100% every day to help push the club forwards."
