Caldwell announced as new captain

In the week when his brother is likely to join the club, Gary Caldwell has been announced as the new Wigan Athletic club captain. The influential defender sat out the game with Blackpool at the weekend after undergoing two hip operations over the summer. He is due to return to first team action in early October. The move seems a logical one as the former Celtic captain has clearly illustrated his leadership qualities since joining the Latics in the summer. Meanwhile, brother Stephen is likely to join the Latics on a permanent basis next week. The former Burnley defender would add much needed leadership to the Wigan squad. The performance in the 4-0 defeat to Blackpool at the weekend was screaming out for a natural leader on the field and that is something either of the Caldwell brothers would add to the team. Stephen Caldwell is likely to join on a two year deal subject to a medical early next week. CLICK HERE FOR THE MESSAGEBOARD
