Bruce: Let's Get Back On Track

25 April 2009 08:09
Steve Bruce has called on his Wigan players to rediscover their winning mentality as they look to get their season back on track at Blackburn on Sunday.[LNB]The Latics were in with a realistic chance of achieving European qualification heading into April, but successive four-goal defeats to Everton and Arsenal meant they slipped back to 11th in the Barclays Premier League table with six games remaining.[LNB]Bruce and his players have had a fortnight's break to lick their wounds and assess what has gone wrong, but the Wigan boss feels the short trip to Ewood Park for the Lancashire derby represents the ideal opportunity to exorcise the demons of their last two outings.[LNB]"You could say it was Everton and Arsenal, but we fell way short of the standards we have set ourselves over the last 18 months or so, and that upsets me," Bruce admitted.[LNB]"The one thing I am determined to do is to not let the season fizzle away. We have done extremely well this season and I just detected something after the Hull game.[LNB]"Getting through that magical 40-point mark, everybody was talking about how well we'd done and the fact we were safe again.[LNB]"Last year it took us until the penultimate game of the season, and the year before it was the very last kick of the season to be safe, and I just want to take the club away from that mentality.[LNB]"We know our limitations at Wigan, and we know we are punching above our weight, but we have to make sure we try and finish the season off as strongly as we possibly can.[LNB]"With technology today, you can analyse everything and everybody, and there are certain things we have tried to address and put in place, but the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.[LNB]"We will have to show what we're about again, and we have six games in which to do it. Can we go on and finish in the top half? That, for me, would be quite an achievement."[LNB]
