Boyce: Blues win was vital

Emmerson Boyce admits anything other than a win over Birmingham on Saturday would have painted a bleak picture for Wigan's survival hopes. The Latics came from behind to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory at the DW Stadium courtesy of Maynor Figueroa's stoppage-time goal. With other sides towards the bottom of the Barclays Premier League also picking up points, the result was not enough to lift Wigan off the foot of the table. They are now only two points from safety with eight games still to play, though, and Boyce told the Wigan Evening Observer: "We saw the other results, and if we hadn't won it would have been a very hard task for us to get out of it. But the three points are in the bag now and we can look forward to the Tottenham game with a great deal of confidence." Full-back Boyce was involved in Wigan's first goal, providing the cross for Tom Cleverley to cancel out Liam Ridgewell's opener for the visitors, and the Barbados international is aiming to continue making an attacking contribution. "I managed to get forward quite a bit, and it's something I have been working on," Boyce said. "Hopefully I can chip in with the creativity and we can keep getting guys on the end of the crosses and score the goals we need to stay up."
