Blues sign Steven Caldwell

irmingham have signed former Wigan central defender Steven Caldwell on a free transfer.[LNB] The 30-year-old Scot, who made a total of 15 appearances for the Latics last season, becomes Blues' fifth Bosman signing of the summer following Marlon King, Chris Burke, Morgaro Gomis and Adam Rooney.[LNB]Recently-appointed City boss Chris Hughton is having to work within tight financial constraints as he looks to build a squad capable of an immediate return to the Premier League.[LNB]Although, with further faces tipped to follow Craig Gardner out of the door at St Andrew's, Hughton may yet get funds to strengthen his squad with a host of players having been released by the club at the end of last term.[LNB]Caldwell arrives from the DW Stadium where he linked up with brother Gary on a one-year deal having previously played for Burnley, Sunderland and Newcastle - earning promotion to the top flight with both the Clarets in 2009 and Black Cats in 2005.
