Beausejour in possible United return

Jean Beausejour is hoping to win his fitness battle and be fit to face Manchester United at Old Trafford this weekend.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez revealed the hamstring injury picked up against Stoke almost a fortnight ago forced the winger to sit out Chile's game with Columbia this week.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Martinez said: “We did a scan straight after the game and it showed Jean had a tear in the hamstring.

“He has been recovering for the last week and a half, it’s been going well, but it’s still too early to tell whether he’ll be involved on Saturday.

“Jean got the injury in pre-season and that’s never a good thing on the eve of a new campaign.

“He didn’t have any real rest period over the last three years because of the World Cup and the Copa America.

“This one was the first summer in a while where he could actually rest his body after a long and demanding campaign.

“He suffered a couple of niggles trying to reactivate his body that we have to get through, but I’m hopeful he’ll benefit from this period in the long term.

“He is such a special player, such a consistent player, and once he’s fully fit he’ll go back to being a key member of our team.”
