Antolin Alcaraz in spit storm

07 November 2011 06:38
Wigan captain Antolin Alcaraz faces a three-match ban after being caught on camera spitting at a Wolves opponent. [LNB]Referee Lee Probert failed to spot the 83rd-minute incident, meaning the FA disciplinary chiefs can review the footage to consider an improper conduct charge. [LNB]Wigan manager Roberto Martinez, whose side slumped to an eighth straight defeat in the Barclays Premier League, also promised to look into the controversy.[LNB] Flashpoint: Antolin Alcaraz appears to spit at Christophe Berra, sparking a clash between both sets of players[LNB] All smiles! 'No-one has told me anything. I will, however, have a look at it and find out.' [LNB]Alcaraz was involved in a tussle with Christophe Berra as Wolves defended a corner late in the second half. The Paraguay centre half fell to the floor and was patted on the head by the Berra as play moved upfield. [LNB]It then appeared that the Wigan man spat at his opposite number, sparking a furious reaction from home players. However, the stand-in skipper hit Richard Stearman instead, which sort of summed up the visitors' day. [LNB]Stearman confirmed he had been spat at but added: 'I don't want to speak about it.' [LNB]Wolves boss Mick McCarthy had not seen it, but said: 'He shouldn't be doing it. Spitting is taboo. It happened to me once when I was playing and the person who spat at me didn't come near me again. It's unacceptable behaviour.'  [LNB] It was a shame that Alcaraz's indiscretion should take the spotlight away from McCarthy. Rounded on by his own supporters before a late two-goal fightback brought a point against Swansea, he needed a result, if not a performance. [LNB] At last! Edwards fires home to secure a much-needed win for Wolves[LNB] [LNB] Pointing the way: O'Hara (above) and Ward (below) celebrate their strikes for Wolves [LNB][LNB] [LNB] The turning point came on the half-hour. Wigan's Hugo Rodallega chested down a Franco di Santo pass and needed just to poke the ball past Wayne Hennessey. Instead, he shot marginally wide. [LNB]From the resulting goal kick, Adlene Guedioura flicked on, Kevin Doyle burst into the area and O'Hara side-footed home his third goal in four matches. [LNB]But Wigan hit back. Stephen Hunt fouled Emmerson Boyce and Ben Watson scored from the rebound after Hennessey saved his penalty. [LNB] Consolation: Watson fired home the rebound after seeing his penalty saved [LNB] [LNB] The crucial next goal came 10 minutes after the break when Karl Henry surged to the bye-line. His pull-back caused a scramble before Dave Edwards scored. [LNB]Then Ward charged into the area and the left back's shot enabled Molineux to breathe easily.[LNB] Mixed emotions: Both managers were hoping to end an alarming run of results[LNB] [LNB]  'I will give my life to keep Wigan in the Premier League,' Martinez insistsLIVE: Wolves 3 Wigan 1: The action as it happenedClick here for the latest Premier League table, fixtures and results All the latest Wigan news, features and opinion All the latest Wolves news, features and opinion LIVE: Wolves 3 Wigan 1: The action as it happened from Molineux [LNB] [LNB]
