Zola backs Hammers to stay up
13 Dec 2009 - 12:28:27
Gianfranco Zola is still refusing to panic despite seeing his West Ham United side slip into the Premier League relegation places.
Saturday's 1-0 defeat at St Andrew's coupled with Wolves' win over Spurs left the ailing Hammers in the drop-zone.
To rub salt into the wounds, former Hammer Lee Bowyer scored the winner for the Blues before Mark Noble was sent off in the 78th minute for his second bookable offence.
But despite the doom and gloom beginning to surround the Upton Park club, Zola claims he has the utmost confidence in the players he currently has at his disposal to stave off the growing threat of relegation.
"The players tried very hard and didn't deserve this result," said Zola.
"But we have to dig even deeper to find a solution and I think we have the players to do it.
"It is important not to panic. We are missing important players through injury but I appreciate what these players are giving me and they are trying very hard."
