Upson calls for Hammers focus
15 Apr 2010 - 11:37:28
Captain Matthew Upson has demanded focus from his West Ham United team-mates despite an improvement in the outlook of the Upton Park club.
The Hammers moved four points clear of the relegation places following a 1-0 victory over Sunderland last weekend.
Their next encounter is a trip to Liverpool on Monday night for a game in which Upson has called for maximum effort and commitment.
The Hammers have not beaten Liverpool at Anfield for more than 40 years.
"The win against Sunderland has put us in a favourable position but there is still work to do," Upson told the club's official website.
"We have to think about extending the gap on the bottom three and making it certain.
"Sunderland was our first 1-0 of the season and it is good to pick up that kind of result. We just wanted to get the win. The three points was huge.
"We didn't relax or play on the ball as well as we would have liked to have done but it was all about the three points. How we got them didn't matter.
"There is still a long way to go. We are not safe. The first thing we addressed after the game was that.
"We know we have the work to do and we will go up to Liverpool next Monday with the mentality of getting something out of the game."
