Mitchell to fight at the Boleyn
West Ham fan Kevin Mitchell will fight for the interim WBO lightweight title at the Boleyn Ground, Upton Park on Saturday 15th May. The 25-year-old unbeaten ‘Dagenham Destroyer’ will fight Australian Michael Katsidis at the home of his favourite team subject to licenses being acquired. Speaking at the press conference this afternoon West Ham owner David Sullivan confirmed the fight had been agreed. “I am delighted that we have been able to bring Kevin Mitchell's dream world title fight here to the Boleyn Ground, subject to licence," he said. "I have been a boxing supporter for many years, sponsoring a number of fights including some of Lennox Lewis's early bouts. "Boxing has had a big part to play in the history of east London and its sporting heritage. I know it will be a special night here and that Kevin - as a passionate West Ham fan - will get a lot of support from our fans. It will be a fight to remember." Mitchell himself was delighted that the fight had been confirmed and admitted he was looking forward to fighting with the full support of a packed Hammers crowd. “To fight here would be something special, unbelievable for me. I come over to Upton Park as often as I can but with the training it is hard sometimes. When I am out of training, I am always here. "All my family are West Ham fans and I first went to Upton Park as a kid, I was probably about eight. It was long before I started boxing."
