On a day when he signed three attacking players, it looked like West Ham boss Sam Allardyce could have done with some defenders as his side crashed to their heaviest defeat of the season. Ipswich at last responded to weeks of public criticism from manager Paul Jewell after plunging to the edge of the drop zone. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas scored twice for Ipswich, who had managed just two wins from their previous 16 games, as the Hammers inexplicably collapsed.
