    Hammers swoop for McCartney

    08 Aug 2006 - 14:03:44

West Ham United have signed Northern Ireland defender George McCartney from Sunderland in a swap deal involving Clive Clarke.

The deal is worth £1million to the Championship club, with the Hammers paying out £600,000 as well as allowing Clarke to move to the Stadium of Light.

McCartney is currently recovering from a knee injury and will not be available to make his West Ham debut for at least another two months, although he was able to pass a medical on Monday evening.

The 25-year-old, who played over 130 league games for Sunderland after progressing from the club's youth set-up, will provide competition to Paul Konchesky at left-back.

Clarke, 26, failed to make an impact at West Ham following his £275,000 move from Stoke City last summer and moves on after starting only two Premiership matches.

However, he was a regular during his time at Stoke, playing over 220 League games in seven seasons.
