    Hammers suffer Upson woe

    04 Feb 2007 - 12:30:11

West Ham United defender Matthew Upson could miss most of February after suffering a calf injury in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.

It is the latest setback for the Hammers who remain entrenched in the relegation zone after the loss, as Upson was making his debut following his transfer deadline day switch from Birmingham City.

Another recent signing, Lucas Neill from Blackburn Rovers, is also currently sidelined after picking up an ankle injury on his West Ham debut, but boss Alan Curbishley is determined to continue working hard to make his side's fortunes change.

He said after the Villa Park setback: "We have to keep going. It's been a very disappointing week.

"The next two games are vital and we need to win them both.

"Last week Lucas Neill lasted 20 minutes, Matty lasted a bit longer today, but it says it all at the moment.

"I believe you have to make your own luck. We need some three pointers at the moment. We need to win some games.

"It's now difficult but I don't want to go on about injuries. But while Matt Upson was on we looked quite strong at the back.

"If we'd got a point it would have a big confidence booster. What it means is that we have to beat both Watford and Charlton in our next two games."
