Hammers snap up Ljungberg
23 Jul 2007 - 14:17:19
West Ham United have completed the signing of Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg in a deal that could eventually rise to £3million.
The 30-year-old Sweden international has agreed a four-year contract with the Hammers after passing a medical at Upton Park.
It had appeared that Ljungberg, who was linked with Fiorentina earlier this summer, would be staying at the Emirates Stadium.
Only last week Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had said: "I expect him (Ljungberg) to be here (at the start of the campaign) because he has not left yet.
"So that is 90 per cent yes. The Freddie case is a bit different than it was for Thierry Henry, if he had wanted to go we would have let him go. But I am happy that he stays."
Ljungberg still had two years remaining on his Arsenal contract but struggled with injuries for most of last season.
He joined the Gunners for £3million from Halmstads in 1998 and made over 300 appearances for the club, scoring 72 goals.
Hammers boss Alan Curbishley has already signed Craig Bellamy, Richard Wright, Julien Faubert and Scott Parker this summer, while allowing Marlon Harewood, Paul Konchesky, Yossi Benayoun, Shaun Newton, Nigel Reo-Coker and Tyrone Mears to leave Upton Park.
