Hammers exit for Ljungberg
06 Aug 2008 - 15:49:35
Sweden international Freddie Ljungberg has had his West Ham United contract terminated with immediate effect.
The 31-year-old midfielder only joined the Hammers last summer from Arsenal but endured a disappointing season at Upton Park.
He found the net only twice in 28 appearances for Alan Curbishley's side and struggled with a succession of injuries.
It is believed several clubs in Europe, the United States and Asia are interested in acquiring Ljungberg's services.
Scott Duxbury, West Ham's chief executive officer, told the club's official website: "We respect Freddie Ljungberg's position and are pleased we could reach agreement and wish him all the best in the future.
"This deal is mutually acceptable to both parties."
Ljungberg added: "I gave my all at West Ham and enjoyed my time there but the decision is the best for the both of us. Now I will take my time to consider my football future."
The midfielder represented Sweden at three European Championships, including this summer's tournament in Austria and Switzerland, as well as the World Cup finals in 2006.
Before moving to Upton Park, Ljungberg spent nine successful seasons with Arsenal, featuring in more than 300 games for the Gunners.
