Hammers clinch Green signing
16 Aug 2006 - 12:36:36
West Ham United have wrapped up the £2million signing of England goalkeeper Robert Green from Norwich City.
The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract with the Hammers after passing a medical and agreeing personal terms to seal his switch to Upton Park.
Green had looked set to join Charlton Athletic earlier in the week after the Addicks agreed a fee with the Canaries, but West Ham nipped in to snare the England custodian.
Green made his City debut as a teenager back in April 1999 against Ipswich Town and has gone on to make nearly 250 first-team appearances for the club.
He was also set to be a member of England's World Cup finals squad this summer, only to suffer a groin injury in a warm-up game against Belarus.
Green is nearly back to full fitness now and will battle for a starting spot with Roy Carroll and Jimmy Walker at Upton Park.
Norwich chief executive Neil Doncaster paid tribute to Green, telling the club's official website: "I would like to put on record our thanks to Robert for his massive contribution to the club.
"I am sure no-one begrudges him his move back to the Premier League.
"He is a model professional, a credit to his profession and, frankly, a thoroughly likeable young man."
