Green sought Deano advice

West Ham United new boy Robert Green admitted that he asked former Norwich City team-mate Dean Ashton for his views on life at Upton Park before agreeing to join the Hammers.

The 26-year-old England international has signed a four-year deal with the Iron and says that Ashton's advice was a key factor in him choosing to snub an approach from Charlton Athletic.

Green said: "I spoke to Dean on Monday morning when the opportunity of a move to West Ham came up and he had nothing but glowing praise for the club.

"I congratulated him on his England call-up and wished him well, but since then it has been a bit of a disaster for him.

"I saw him again on Tuesday in the hospital. I was having my medical and he was having surgery on his ankle injury.

"It's a real disappointment for him and a massive blow, but he's got to be philosophical about it.

"He's a great lad and I'm sure he will bounce back."
