Fresh knee woe for Collins
25 Jan 2008 - 07:34:11
West Ham United defender James Collins faces a further spell on the sidelines after suffering a fresh injury during his comeback from a groin problem.
Collins, who has been out of action for six weeks, was stretchered off during a reserve team game against Portsmouth on Wednesday with suspected knee ligament damage and could be missing for several more weeks.
The Wales international has managed just five appearances for the Hammers during an injury-ravaged season.
Danny Gabbidon was also making his own return from injury in the same match and told the club's official website: "I feel for James because he was playing so well up to then
"He was a bit unlucky the guy fell on his knee and he has done something to it.
"Hopefully he can recover and get back a quick as possible. It is disappointing to see him get an injury."
Gabbidon is now expected to challenge fellow central defenders Matthew Upson and Anton Ferdinand for a starting spot in the coming weeks.
"I got through this game and we will see how my body reacts," he continued.
"Hopefully now I can keep improving, get stronger and stronger and get some games under my belt.
"I just want to try and stay available for the first team for the rest of the season now."
