Blades win compensation fight
23 Sep 2008 - 08:50:30
A Football Association arbitration panel has ruled in favour of Sheffield United in their claim for compensation from West Ham United over the Carlos Tevez affair.
The Hammers have already been fined £5.5million by the Premier League for fielding both Tevez and Javier Mascherano during the 2006-07 season, despite the duo being partly owned by a third party.
However, West Ham avoided a points penalty and escaped relegation at the expense of the Blades, with Tevez netting a crucial last-day winner at Manchester United.
The Bramall Lane club initially launched a legal bid to try and win back their Premier League status, before settling on a compensation claim which they hope will earn them around £30million.
Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe told the club's official website: "I can confirm that both clubs have been notified of the ruling. The arbitration panel has awarded in our favour.
"The matter is still legally in process, so I do not wish to comment any further until we have completed that process."
Argentina striker Tevez now plays for Manchester United, while his compatriot, Mascherano, is a key performer in the Liverpool midfield.
