Victory only option for Mel

West Brom manager Pepe Mel is refusing to contemplate anything other than victory over Cardiff as his side try to move out of Barclays Premier League relegation danger.

The Baggies have recorded one win since Mel's appointment as boss on January 9, a 2-1 victory at Swansea earlier this month, and are 16th, three points clear of second-bottom Cardiff, going into the weekend.

The Spaniard is desperate for a defeat of the Bluebirds to deepen the Welshmen's woes and improve Albion's survival chances.

"We need the spirit we had against Swansea," Mel told a press conference to preview the Cardiff match.

"We've been conceding too many early goals. We need that extra effort against Cardiff.

"This (relegation) is not a situation that comes into my head. I am far more optimistic.

"For us there is only one game. Cardiff is the 'final'. The only thing that will do for us is a victory."

Striker Victor Anichebe faces a fitness test after limping off in the loss at Hull with a hamstring problem.

"There is a question mark over Anichebe," Mel added.

"We will see how he is tomorrow. We are waiting to find out on Anichebe, but we need to make sure we are strong defensively. We've conceded too many goals."

Jonas Olsson serves the final game of his two-match suspension, captain Chris Brunt (knee), Billy Jones and Claudio Yacob (both hamstring) remain out.

Gareth McAuley, who was taken off as a precaution with a swollen ankle at Hull, is expected to recover, while Diego Lugano and Morgan Amalfitano (both knee) have returned to training and could be in contention.
