Scharner relishing central role

Published: 02 Sep 2010 - 16:00:33

Paul Scharner has revealed the chance to play in his favoured central midfield role persuaded him to sign for West Brom. The Austrian international, who ended a four-and-a-half year stay at Wigan at the end of last season, joined the Baggies earlier this week and could make his debut against Tottenham next Saturday.Scharner played most of his football in central defence for the Latics and he fired a parting shot at Roberto Martinez's team as he looked forward to his new role."The style of play here is beautiful and what I was looking for was to get into a team that plays football," the 30-year-old told the club's official website. "That's what I've missed over the last couple of years."I've signed as a central midfielder and that is why I joined West Bromwich because I want to take the chance to show everyone this is the right position for me."Scharner watched his new side lose 1-0 to Liverpool last weekend, and he added: "It was an undeserved defeat. There is a lot of potential and I'm sure we can stay in the league."
