Portsmouth have confirmed that they have rejected a £2million bid from West Bromwich Albion for midfielder Marc Wilson.

The 22-year-old Republic of Ireland international has become a key figure in the Fratton Park squad following a summer of major changes on the South Coast and boss Steve Cotterill wants to keep Wilson.

He told The News: "To be honest we would not want to sell Marc Wilson.

"There is no way, absolutely no way we want Marc Wilson to leave.

"I think he is going to be a great player, a massive player and I want to work with him here.

"I am surprised at the bid, it's an unwelcome distraction."
