    Mowbray rues solitary point

    17 Mar 2009 - 07:41:22

Manager Tony Mowbray admitted West Bromwich Albion were down but not out following Monday's goalless draw with West Ham United.

The rock-bottom Baggies left Upton Park still six points adrift of safety after failing to overcome an injury-ravaged West Ham side on a frustrating night.

The closest they came to breaking the deadlock was a second-half header from Shelton Martis which rattled the crossbar.

But despite time beginning to run out on Albion's battle to avoid relegation, Mowbray still believes they can pick up the points necessary to avoid an immediate return to the Championship.

"The players were sitting in the dressing room pretty deflated and pretty down after the game," he admitted.

"It was there for us to win. We had chances.

"I have seen West Ham a couple of times this season and, for whatever reason, they lacked the spark they showed on those occasions.

"It was a real opportunity for us to take the points and yet it slipped through our fingers.

"We are a bit deflated but we've got a real good fighting chance of staying up. We've got to hope this draw is a starting point.

"But if we win the next two games, it will look like a decent point."
