Is there a way back for Odemwingie?
After the fiasco of Peter Odemwingie’s deadline day embarrassment, is there a way back for the man who has been West Bromwich Albion’s top scorer in the past two seasons?
After what was a ‘misunderstanding,’ the Nigerian headed to Loftus Road, QPR, to complete a deal, despite West Brom rejecting their offer. He was then prevented from entering Loftus Road and was left red faced as he attempted in vain to complete a move, after he requested a transfer last week after hearing of QPR’s interest.
But is there a way back for him?
After being sent home from training this morning and given a few days ‘rest’, Odemwingie’s future at the Baggies looks bleak and even if he appears, he will no longer be a favourite with the fans.
The 31 year old last week tweeted his frustration at his transfer request being rejected and if that wasn’t enough to get himself into trouble, today he criticised his current club.
He believes Technical Director Dan Ashton granted Odemwingie his move to QPR through a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ and he even said his goodbyes to the players and staff at the clubs training ground as he was convinced the deal was going to happen. The deal was part-exchange but it fell through due to QPR forward Justin Hoilett refusing to go the other way as a makeweight part of the deal.
Today, Albion chairman Jeremy Peace, said: "Peter must now accept the fact he remains under contract for a further 18 months and has to focus on his Albion commitments."
But, Odemwingie maintains he will not see out his contract and he will more than likely be leaving in the summer.
He says he will return to training next week but will he play for the club again? It appears unlikely and the player, like other want away players in the past, may be forced to train with the youth team and maybe play for the Albion reserves.
Misunderstanding or not, the whole situation was an embarrassment to the clubs involved and most of all, the player and the sooner the issue is resolved, the better.
