Boss pleased with Everton win
New Albion boss Steve Clarke guided Albion to their best ever start to a Premier League season after watching his Baggies side beat in-form Everton 2-0 at The Hawthorns.
Shane Long’s cool finish in the 65th minute after a swift counter attack saw Albion edge ahead in an even contest before Gareth McAuley sealed the points with a close range header eight minutes from time.
Everton arrived at The Hawthorns in fine form after back-to-back wins against Manchester United and Aston Villa.
Albion matched the visitors and were unlucky not to take the league in the first half when Shane Long’s header crashed against the crossbar.
The game swung in Albion’s favour after Clarke introduced substitutes Billy Jones and Peter Odemwingie. It was Odemwingie who broke down the left hand side and crossed an inviting ball for Long to side-foot home.
Another of Clarke’s substitutes Chris Brunt then delivered a perfect corner for McAuley to nod home underneath the crossbar.
The win continued Albion’s unbeaten start under Clarke – and moved the Baggies into third in the league going into the international break.
“It was a very good afternoon,” Steve Clarke said. “It was a good game for us. “Everton came here in a good moment and we arrived also in a good moment. “I thought the first half was a little bit cagey, it was two good teams that were feeling each other out a little bit. “In the second half the game opened up a little bit and I thought we were good value for the win.” “It’s a good start when you look at the games we've had. “It could have been difficult – mind you it is always difficult in the Premier League. “It doesn’t matter who you play, you know it’s going to be a tough game. “But seven points out of nine is a good start and it gives us something to build on.”
