Carson misses Bulgaria clash

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson has been released from the England squad following a family bereavement.

Carson was hoping to make his first international appearance for two years against Bulgaria at Wembley on Friday but will now play no part in the Euro 2012 qualifier.

The 24-year-old shot-stopper was competing with Ben Foster for the right to provide cover for new England number one Joe Hart of Manchester City.

Carson could be back in contention for Tuesday's trip to Switzerland following reports that he will return to the England camp on Sunday evening.

Head coach Fabio Capello has called Watford's Scott Loach up from the under-21 squad to act as cover.

West Ham's Robert Green and Chris Kirkland of Wigan were overlooked for the squad for a slight injury and loss of form respectively, while veteran World Cup keeper David James was also omitted.

Meanwhile, Capello claims he has learned from his World Cup disappointment.

The Italian coach and his players came in for fierce criticism after they bowed out of the tournament in South Africa at the second round stage following a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany.

"I learn something after a new experience," offered Capello when asked if he had changed his approach following a dismal tournament performance.

"I changed something, but not a lot.

"We have to play without fear, I thought the players trained very well, with confidence, and I hope tomorrow we can see the same during the game.

"Bulgaria will not be an easy game to play, they are really good technically, they defend with nine players - one forward - and they play on the counter, really fast.

"Their quality is good but we have to win, we have to play well, and I hope also the fans will support us during the game."

Capello also revealed that the international door remains open for David Beckham despite appearing to end the career of the veteran midfielder and former captain in the build-up to last month's friendly victory over Hungary.

"The door is open for all the players, always," he stated. "I prefer at this moment to choose young players."
