Boss - Albion deserved point
Clarke disappointed with defeat
Steve Clarke believes Albion deserved something after Champions League chasing Arsenal narrowly beat the Baggies 2-1 at The Hawthorns.
Albion had enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges but found themselves a goal down after 20 minutes when Gervinho crossed for Tomas Rosicky to head home from close range.
The visitors doubled their advantage after the break when Rosicky beat Ben Foster with a close range volley, after his initial effort had been saved by the ‘keeper.
The Baggies found a way back into the game when Per Mertesacker was sent off for a professional foul on Shane Long in the penalty area. James Morrison fired home the resulting kick.
Arsenal found themselves under pressure at the game wore on with Gareth McAuley, Romelu Lukaku and Shane Long all coming close as the Gunners hung on for the victory.
“We played well today,” said Albion’s head coach. “They scored with one of the very few chances they created in the first half. “We didn’t really create enough in the first half but could have had a penalty if you look at the challenge on Claudio Yacob on the edge of the box. “On another day it’s a penalty and that would have changed the whole complexion of the game. “It was disappointing to lose the second goal. “The start of the second half was crucial for us to get back in it. “We gave away another soft goal. “It was a bad goal to lose and at 2-0 it’s difficult to get back into the game. “We made a couple of changes and had a go. “The penalty and the red card changed it and gave us a chance to get something from the game.”
