Berahino wants to remain a Baggie
Striker dismisses newspaper claims
Striking star Saido Berahino insists he wants to remain with the club after his goal-scoring exploits against Manchester United.
The striker’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season and the England Under-21 international is close to agreeing an improved deal.
Newspaper reports today suggested that Arsenal and Everton were both tracking the youngster and hoped to sign the striker when he contract expires at the end of the season.
However, Berahino has no intention of leaving the club he’s been with since the age of 11.
“We are talking,” Berahino confirmed.
“It is between me and the club to sort it out and soon something will be done.
“We’ve just got to wait. I have been here since I was 11. It feels like all my life. It’s a great club and they have brought me on and educated me well, so why not stay?”
The striker’s performance surprised many outside of the Albion camp. But not Baggies boss Steve Clarke.
“I’m not surprised by his progress - but I am delighted,” said Clarke.
“I’m not surprised because I saw the signs last summer of how good he can be.
“We sent him out (on loan to Peterborough), he got injured and had a difficult time coming back.
“But he came into the squad, came into the group and he’s been impressive.
“He’s had some starts for us, he’s scored a few goals, I saw him do well for England under-21s - my job now is to manage him, keep his feet on the ground. But he has a big future in the game if he keeps doing what he’s doing.”
