Albion complete Anelka deal
Striker becomes first summer signing
Former French international Nicolas Anelka has signed a one-year deal, plus a year in the club’s favour, to become Albion’s first signing of the summer.
The 34-year-old joins on a free transfer and is reunited with his former coach at Chelsea Steve Clarke.
The much decorated Anelka said that Albion is the “club for me” after turning down other offers to move to The Baggies.
“I’ve always liked West Brom,” said the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City front man.
“I have a lot of good memories of playing against West Brom and now I have to do my best to score for West Brom.
“When I was playing for Chelsea it was always tough to beat Albion.
“The team plays good football and I know I will be able to play my game here.
“Hopefully I will be able to help the team win more games.
“I don’t know which position I will play.
“As long as I’m playing and enjoying my football I’m happy.”
Baggies boss Steve Clarke hailed the arrival of Anelka and believes his signing will give a big boost to the club.
“The sole focus at the club is trying to build on what we did last season,” he said. “The more quality players you can bring to the club the better – and no-one can question Nicolas’ quality. “He’s a player I have worked with before as I was at Chelsea when they signed him. “He’s got a great work ethic, looks after himself and is a consummate professional. “If you add that to the obvious talent he’s got I think he can prove to be a really top signing for the club. “His experience with some of the top clubs in England and Europe will stand the group in good stead. “Hopefully he will be able to inspire the other players to even greater heights than we managed to achieve last year.”
