'Big fat Benni': Karren Brady slammed McCarthy

Karren Brady has branded West Ham flop Benni McCarthy a 'big fat mistake'.

The club's vice chairman admitted West Ham had wasted ?5million on the 33-year-old South Africa striker who started just three games and failed to score after moving from Blackburn 15 months ago.

The Hammers did a deal this week to settle his contract, and Brady confessed: 'Rather than the super scorer we hoped for we acquired a super size, a player devoted to filling his belly more than filling the net.

'As time went by, he grew bigger and bigger and although he made aneffort to slim down, he'd passed the waistline of no return.'

The club suffered a huge blow ahead of today's crucial relegationclash with Aston Villa at Upton Park when midfield talisman ScottParker was ruled out.

Parker, on the PFA's short-list to be crowned Player of the Yeartomorrow night, has been struggling all season with an achilles problemand was substituted after 76 minutes of last week's 3-0 defeat atBolton.

Hammers boss Avram Grant tried to play down the doubts over Parker but Thomas Hitzlsperger let the news slip when he said it would be disappointing to lose his midfield partner for the game.

West Ham will test the player's fitness on a week-by week basis during the run-in.

Hitzlsperger, who today faces his old club for the first time since he left Villa six years ago, also revealed his friendship with Mervyn King, the governor of the Bank of England, who is a Villa fan.
