West Ham's Reece Oxford has signed a new long-term contract with the club, despite major interest from a number of top Premier League sides.

Oxford, who turned 16 in December, has been playing for West Ham’s U21 squad and has captained the side on a number of occasions.

The quick and powerful defender is widely considered one of the most promising youth players in England.

In September, the youngster was an unused substitute in the first team’s 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United.

The 6ft 3in central defender has also had a promising international career having played in three U16 matches for England and nine U17 matches, many of which he had been selected as captain.

Club chairman David Sullivan had showed his outrage at the possibility of Arsenal or Manchester United signing Oxford and questioned the purpose of spending £5million per year on running a youth academy.

West Ham’s 16 year old wing back Oscar Borg had also signed a long term deal with the club back in September. The “new Gareth Bale” had previously been on trial at Manchester United but opted to stay at West Ham.

The club’s youth academy nicknamed “the academy of football” finally looks like its back on track producing top class footballers like the old days.
