West Ham target out of contract striker

The club admitted that one forward - believed to be Man City's Benjani - rejected the chance to move to Upton Park on deadline day. And now Gianfranco Zola, the West Ham manager, will continue to chase a striker currently a free agent who could join his club outside the window. Zola is still without long-term injury victims Luis Boa-Morte and Dean Ashton, though he did sign striker Alessandro Diamanti, from Italian club Livorno, last week. “Gianluca Nani and Gianfranco Zola are now discussing the possibility of an out of contract striker joining the club, who has been tracked in the past month,” said a statement on the club's website. West Ham were able to hold on to Matthew Upson, who was wanted by Fiorentina - they had a bid of £9 million rejected for the England defender - and Spurs. But fellow central defender James Collins did leave, signing for Aston Villa for £5 million. With Danny Gabbidon continuing his progress from a lengthy injury, Zola is confident he has defensive cover, particularly as he has also signed Manuel Da Costa, from Fiorentina.
