West Ham miss chance to top Championship

West Ham wasted a chance to go top of the Championship after Lee Bowyer returned to haunt his former club with the late goal that gave Ipswich a 1-0 win at Upton Park on Tuesday.

Bowyer, who had two spells with the Hammers, scored his first goal for Ipswich with just seconds left to give the visitors their second win in three games and hand boss Paul Jewell, who turns 47 on Wednesday, the perfect early birthday present.

Bowyer tapped into the net after Keith Andrews had seen his header from Jimmy Bullard's corner hit a post to end the fourth placed West Ham's seven-game unbeaten run.

Derby were also unable to take the chance to move into pole position in English football's second tier after being held to a 1-1 draw by Barnsley at Pride Park.

Nigel Clough's team dominated for large spells at Pride Park but were denied for long periods by a magnificent performance from Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele.

And the Tykes even threatened to steal all three points when Jacob Butterfield profited from some poor defending to open the scoring from close range 10 minutes before the interval.

Derby drew level when Barnsley's defender Bobby Hassell brought down Ben Davies to gift the hosts a penalty which was converted by Steve Davies.

Derby are now level on points with leaders Southampton, but trail Nigel Adkins' side, who have a game in hand, on goal difference.

Burnley heaped more pressure on Nottingham Forest boss Steve McClaren after romping to a 5-1 victory at Turf Moor.

McClaren was looking for back-to-back wins for the first time since taking charge of Forest, but his side went 3-0 down inside the opening half-hour.

Jay Rodriguez capitalised on some poor Forest defending to head Burnley in front after five minutes and he made it 2-0 with another header in the 15th minute.

Chris McCann virtually sealed Forest's fate with 29 minutes gone, prompting scores of visiting fans to head for the exits.

Ross Wallace made it 4-0 just before the break and Ishmael Miller got one back for Forest in the second half before Charlie Austin wrapped up Burnley's first home league win of the season with an excellent header.

Crystal Palace scored three times in the last 10 minutes to clinch a dramatic 3-1 victory over rivals Brightons at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls were within 10 minutes of a first victory over their arch rivals on home soil since 1988, and a return to the top of the table, following Craig Mackail-Smith's early opener.

But Wilfried Zaha struck a deserved equaliser and substitute Darren Ambrose put the visitors ahead before former Brighton forward Murray rammed the taunts of the Seagulls faithful back down their throats with the third goal in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, Dean Saunders remains unbeaten as Doncaster manager after a 1-1 draw against Hull at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Peterborough beat Portsmouth 3-2, Reading won 3-2 at Bristol City, Watford won 2-1 against Millwall and Coventry drew 2-2 with Blackpool.
