West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate wins appeal against red card

West Ham midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate has had his red card against Blackburn on Sunday overturned.

Kouyate was dismissed by referee Jon Moss for bringing down Rovers defender Adam Henley in the 75th minute of West Ham's 5-1 FA Cup win at Ewood Park.

But the Hammers appealed against the decision, contesting that the ball had run a long way in front of Henley and was not therefore presenting an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

The Football Association on Tuesday agreed with the appeal, meaning Kouyate will not serve a suspension and will be able to face Sunderland at Upton Park on Saturday.

An FA statement read: " Cheikhou Kouyate's one-match suspension for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity has been withdrawn with immediate effect following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing.

"West Ham United's claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to their Emirates FA Cup fifth-round proper tie against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday 21 February 2016 was upheld."
