West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola opens gates to public for training

Alan Shearer opened the doors at St James' Park soon after taking over, and more than 7,000 fans turned up. And West Ham are expecting a similar response at Upton Park where fans can watch their players train, from 11am today. Supporters, who can get into the stadium from 10am, will watch from the Centenary Stand Upper as Gianfranco Zola puts the entire first-team through their paces ahead of Saturday's visit to Aston Villa. Those fans will be interested to see if Scott Parker and Radoslav Kovac will be involved; the key midfielders both missed the 1-0 defeat at Tottenham and their return could be crucial if West Ham are to maintain their push for a place in next season's Europa League. West Ham remain in seventh place, behind sixth-placed Everton and Villa, who are fifth. Meanwhile, Matthew Upson's quest for European football will be the deciding factor on whether the England defender moves to a rival club this summer. Upson has yet to commit his future at Upton Park beyond this summer with Arsenal and Manchester City still front-runners to secure his services. If West Ham fail to qualify for the Europa League, it is understood that Gianfranco Zola will not stand in Upson's way for a move across London – despite the defender being a key player. "It's something that as an individual, I need to be doing," said Upson. "I have personal aspirations that I want to achieve and the better standard my domestic football is, the greater chance that has of helping me achieve those."
