Cole, who earned his first England cap as a substitute in the 2-0 friendly defeat by Spain last week, is the Hammers' top scorer this season having scored eight times in the league. He registered just four league goals in the whole of last term and was a target for fan's frustrations as the team's struggled to break the opposition down. His recent flurry of goals coincides with a new five-year contract and the arrival of Gianfranco Zola as manager after Alan Curbishley's resignation. He initially gained a regular place in the starting line-up thanks to the latest in a series of ankle injuries to Dean Ashton. On Sunday, Ashton was ruled out for the rest of the season as he takes a cautious approach to his rehabilitation following two bouts of ankle surgery.
