West Ham hope to give Guillermo Franco debut in Carling Cup

The Mexican striker signed for West Ham last week after scoring four goals in his last six internationals. And Zola believes Franco will prove to be the final piece in his jigsaw after he spent the summer strengthening the club's strikeforce. Zola, who picked up Franco as a free agent after his Villarreal deal came to an end, said: "He is a main striker, he is very good at holding the ball and very good with his feet. "He likes to play off the other strikers so he can make a difference for us." Portsmouth midfielder Michael Brown feels Tuesday night's 750-mile round trip to Carlisle will make a "nice change" from their nightmare start to the Premier League campaign. Paul Hart's men suffered a sixth successive league defeat when they went down 2-0 at Aston Villa on Saturday. "Maybe it will be good to have a game away from the Premier League," Brown said. Jamie O'Hara, Prince Boateng, Tommy Smith and Mike Williamson are all cup-tied so Hart will have little option by to bring in some of his fringe players. Uruguay international Diego Arismendi will make his eagerly awaited Stoke debut when Tony Pulis fields his shadow squad for tonight's tie at home to Blackpool.
