West Ham boss Zola battles Jose for £2m Livorno midfielder Candreva

Gianfranco Zola hopes to steal a march on Italian giants Inter Milan and Juventus by making a swoop for Livorno midfielder Antonio Candreva in January. The 22-year-old is well known to the West Ham manager, who coached Candreva in the Italy Under 21 side before taking over at Upton Park just over a year ago. The player's performances as a regular in the Livorno side have caught the eye of Jose Mourinho and both the Inter boss and Juve are waiting for Candreva's contract to expire at the end of the season before weighing up a bid. But Zola wants to get in early with a £2million January bid and the persuasive argument that Candreva would get more opportunities to play for the Hammers than at one of Italy's biggest clubs. Livorno have not given up hope of their starlet signing a new contract, but talks have stalled.
