New Hammer: Wally Downes set for role at West Ham
Wally Downes is determined to help West Ham United out of trouble after being drafted in as Avram Grant's assistant.
The 49-year-old former Brentford boss has been brought in to focus on the Hammers leaky defence following the sacking of Zeljko Petrovic.
West Ham could yet appoint a forwards' coach to help Grant, with former Upton Park hero Paolo di Canio mooted, but Downes is the first through the door - as predicted by Sportsmail.
'It's an honour to be asked to help out such a good club,' said Downes. 'I'll do my best to help lift them out of the relegation area.'
Joint West Ham owners David Sullivan and David Gold arehoping Downes will help Grant move the eastLondon club off the bottom of the BarclaysPremier League.

Downes has been out of work since he wasdismissed as a member of Alan Pardew'sbackroom staff at Southampton in August.
The former Wimbledon midfielder was also amember of Steve Coppell's coaching staff atReading after nearly two years in charge atBrentford, where he was sacked in 2004.
West Ham have already labelled the clashagainst Wigan at Upton Park on Saturday as a'save our season' game.
