Upson at a loss to explain England woes

Matthew Upson is at a loss to explain England's poor showing at the World Cup or their regular failure to "do it against the big countries".[LNB] The West Ham defender scored on Sunday but his first-half header proved inadequate to threaten Germany, who ran out comfortable 4-1 winners in Bloemfontein.[LNB]While Joachim Low's men can now look forward to a quarter-final against Argentina in Cape Town - and a rematch of the 1990 final - England are left to rake over the coals of yet another dismal tournament.[LNB]Fabio Capello refused to contemplate resignation on Sunday night and instead said he intended to speak with Club England chairman Sir David Richards to determine whether the FA retained confidence in the 64-year-old ahead of the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, which starts in September.[LNB]For that, some answers for England's woeful showing need to be found. But Upson admits he has none.[LNB]"I would love to explain," said Upson.[LNB]"It is very difficult to analyse all these games and give a reason why X, Y andZ happened.[LNB]"I don't know. I can't explain the performances.[LNB]"But I don't think they have all been as bad as what we are talking about."[LNB]The defeat raised so many issues, as well as continuing a barren record against bigger countries in tournament football since 2000, when they beat Germany during an otherwise disastrous European Championships.[LNB]"I don't have the answer to why we never do it against the big countries," continued Upson.[LNB]"You have 11 players giving it 100%. At the end of the day we weren't good enough to get the result. It is as simple as that.[LNB]"Where England go from here is a good question. It is something the manager will be thinking a lot.[LNB]"He will be analysing everything we have done in the tournament and I am sure he will learn a lot for the future."[LNB]Emile Heskey, meanwhile, believes England need to seriously think about what what went wrong in South Africa and how they can improve upon it in future.[LNB]The Aston Villa striker said: "We are disappointed to go out before the quarter-finals but it is back to the drawing board.[LNB]"We have come up against a very strong German side but we have got to go back and revaluate things.[LNB]"We have to look at certain stuff.[LNB]"But you can't blame the season in England for what happened. Germany played a long, hard season as well so you can't really use that as an excuse.[LNB]"The German league is just as tough as ours, even tougher some might say."[LNB]Heskey has also admitted England were caught a little by surprise by the Germans.[LNB]He said: "The lads are gutted, everyone is gutted, what can I say?[LNB]"It is difficult to say what would have happened if Frank's shot had been allowed. It is ifs and buts.[LNB]"But you've just got to get on with it and they were a strong side. It is a good side we played against.[LNB]"We knew they were going to be strong but they did surprise us a bit."
