Sunderland 2 West Ham 2: Bruce blasts Jones and Ilunga's antics

02 November 2009 02:37
When Kenwyne Jones turns up for work today, he will be called into his manager's office, docked two weeks' wages and ordered to hand over 100,000 to the players' fines kitty. [LNB]Referee Andre Marriner showed Jones the red card a minute before half-time after he shoved Herita Ilunga in the chest. [LNB]Sunderland boss Steve Bruce knew Marriner had little option. Besides, Bruce was saved the job of substituting Jones.[LNB] Flashpoint: Kenwyne Jones (left) saw red for pushing Herita Ulunga[LNB] [LNB]The dismissal came seconds after a furious Bruce leapt on the pitch to scream at the laid-back striker. He was so angry that even fourth official Darren Deadman wisely left him to it. [LNB]Bruce did get a reaction from Jones, but not the one he wanted. The Sunderland manager was in no doubt, though, that Ilunga's elaborate fall and his subsequent feigning of serious injury to his face, which was untouched by Jones, played a part in Marriner's decision. [LNB]He was equally damning of the West Ham physios who applied towels and ice to the 'injury'.[LNB] Comeback: Sunderland's Kieran Richardson (left) scores his sides second goal[LNB] [LNB]Bruce called on his fellow managers, coaches and players to deal with the behaviour he says is a serious threat to the game. [LNB]'I'm embarrassed by his (Ilunga's) actions,' he said. 'And I would certainly be embarrassed if he was one of my players. [LNB]'When he sees it, I hope he feels good about himself because I really can't see it and I have studied it 10 times. He's been pushed in the chest and gone over like a big . . . You can write it. And to get an ice pack like that, for something as trivial, well . . . [LNB]'He has pushed him but he goes down as if he has been poleaxed. I can't defend Kenwyne because we know it was stupid. He's disappointed with himself, he knows it was wrong but we've all done it.[LNB] Off: Referee Andre Marriner shows the red card to Radoslav Kovac (centre)[LNB] [LNB]'But referees have a difficult enough job without all this, which is creeping into our game. This diving, this play acting, trying to get people sent off.' [LNB]Ilunga's disgraceful actions, which were matched by Guillermo Franco's pathetic dive in an attempt to get Paolo da Silva booked, should not overshadow what Bruce described as a 'fantastic' game and a breathtaking comeback from his side who were two down after 36 minutes, despite dominating. [LNB]MATCH STATS SUNDERLAND (4-4-2): Gordon 8; Da Silva 7, Nosworthy 5, Turner 7, Richardson 6; Malbranque 6 (McCartney 81min), Cana 7, Henderson 7, Reid 8; Jones 5, Bent 7. Booked: Cana, Bent, Turner.Sent off: Jones.[LNB]WEST HAM (4-4-2): Green 6; Spector 6, Tomkins 6, Upson 7, Ilunga 4; Behrami 6 (Diamanti 67, 6), Noble 7, Kovac 5, Collison 8; Franco 6 (Hines 72, 7), Cole 8. Booked: Ilunga, Cole. Sent off: Kovac.[LNB]Man of the match: Andy Reid.[LNB]Referee: Andre Marriner.[LNB]Franco scored the first, applying a neat finish to Jack Collison's cross before the impressive young midfielder supplied Carlton Cole's fifth in six games. [LNB]Andy Reid's brilliant response was a top corner free-kick which left Robert Green rooted. [LNB]Although Jones was dismissed, Kieran Richardson rescued a point before Radoslav Kovac was dismissed late on for a debatable second booking. [LNB]West Ham boss Gianfranco Zola said: 'We need to be more cynical. When you're in control of the game, you have to keep it that way, no matter what.'[LNB] Halloween horror: Eight players see red in Premier League day of shameThree clubs in David Gold rush, but West Ham aren't one of themSUNDERLAND FC
