Stoke 2 West Ham 1: Robert Huth facing FA and Pulis grilling after Upson spat

19 October 2009 02:22
Stoke defender Robert Huth is facing a violent conduct charge after appearing to strike West Ham's Matthew Upson in the face during a melee at a free kick. Upson needed stitches after the blow reopened a cut near his right eye, suffered in the first half, but the incident was not seen by referee Martin Atkinson. Huth, who faces a three-game ban, is also threatened with club disciplinary action and manager Tony Pulis said: 'I will have a look at the video and if he has done something it's very disappointing and we will deal with it.'  Huth's fellow defender Ryan Shawcross gave the sort of display that could make him a shock selection for the World Cup squad. West Ham's Carlton Cole is a striker in the England reckoning but man-of-the-match Shawcross, 22, kept him quiet. Shawcross's display was summed up by a last-ditch block on a Cole shot in the 67th minute when the score was 1-1. Three minutes later, Stoke scored their winner. Shawcross said: 'He bought me as a reserve player and turned me into a Premier League player. He's got to take most of the credit. ' Stoke went ahead in the 11th minute when Julien Faubert tripped Matthew Etherington and James Beattie scored from the spot. Upson's header made it 1-1 after 34 minutes but Stoke won it in the 69th minute when Beattie was first to Ricardo Fuller's spilled shot. West Ham's Valon Behrami said his side's dire form is due to bad luck. 'We are in an unlucky phase,' he said.
