Rivals want slice of Sheffield United's Tevez clash

Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Preston are understood to have taken legal advice about launching a compensation claim against Sheffield United as the ramifications of the Carlos Tevez affair rumble on. [LNB] Case for compensation? Striker Jon Stead moved from Sunderland to Neil Warnock's Sheffield United during the ill-fated 2006-07 campaign.[LNB]Leeds United chairman Ken Bates revealed yesterday he is considering staking a claim for a £500,000 slice of the £25million West Ham have agreed to pay Sheffield United in compensation for their relegation two years ago. [LNB]Bates believes he is entitled to a windfall because three players he sold to the Blades during the 2006-07 season - Matthew Kilgallon, Rob Hulse and Ian Bennett - had clauses written into their contracts entitling Leeds to bonus payments should their Yorkshire rivals have stayed in the top flight. [LNB]Using the same criteria, Sunderland West Bromwich and Preston are now considering following suit as the 'legal anarchy' predicted in yesterday's Sportsmail by West Ham chief executive Scott Duxbury appears to be gathering pace. [LNB]Preston sold Chris Lucketti and Claude Davis to United in the summer of 2006, while West Bromwich transferred Geoff Horsfield and Sunderland striker Jon Stead moved to Bramall Lane in the January transfer window.
