Nolan pours pressure on Poyet with Hammers winner

A superb goal by Kevin Nolan was enough to give West Ham a 1-0 win over Brighton and move them up to second in the Championship on Monday.

The former Bolton and Newcastle star's 17th minute goal heaped further pressure on Brighton manager Gus Poyet, who has seen his side fail to win in their last seven matches after a bright start to the campaign which saw them top at one point.

Victory sees the Hammers trail leaders Southampton by just three points.

Defeat was a little bit unlucky for the hosts as aside from Nolan's goal - which saw him beat former Newcastle team-mate Steve Harper from 25 yards out - they had the better chances to score.

Scottish international striker Craig Mackail-Smith had two good opportunities, but was denied twice by West Ham's Spanish goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, who is on loan from Arsenal.

However, West Ham hung on to claim their fourth away win in seven matches this term.
