George McCartney is free to play against former club West Ham after his weekend dismissal was rescinded on appeal by the FA, as predicted by Sportsmail. The Sunderland defender was sent off on Sunday for pulling back Shaun Wright-Phillips just 15 minutes in to his side's 1-0 defeat at Manchester City. Sunderland submitted video evidence to the FA's appeals committee showing that keeper Marton Fulop had the ball in his hands at the time of the foul in the penalty area. Overturned: George McCartney is sent off by Steve Tanner on Saturday Mackems boss Ricky Sbragia said: 'George made some sort of contact butwhen the contact was made, the goalkeeper had the ball in his hands. 'Ijust couldn't see why the ref went for the sending off. I don't see howGeorge can have denied Wright-Phillips a goalscoring opportunity.' McCartney re-joined Sunderland from West Ham in a £6million deal inthe summer and he would have missed their next game at Upton Park aweek on Saturday if referee Steve Tanner's decision had stood.  Kenwyne Jones starting to feel the strain of hectic season with SunderlandFrom Gregory's Girl to Jimmy Grimble: Sportsmail's Premier League of footballing filmsSportsmail's Star of the Season: Which player has been the top man at your club this campaign?
